Description

The Tennessee State House of Representatives is the lower house of the bicameral Tennessee State Legislature. The House has 99 members, who each represent one district, which results in about 64,102 constituents per representative. Primary responsibilities of a house representative include, developing budget packages, making taxation decisions, passing legislation, allocating spending, and redistricting in collaboration with other house members and the state senate. Additionally, the house has the exclusive authority to impeach state officials, who will then be tried by the senate. A house member serves a two-year term, with no limit on the number of terms served. The salary of the position is $7,200 per year in addition to a per diem of $190 for every day in session.

Application Guidelines
1) Contact the Tennessee Division of Elections to confirm that your registered address qualifies you for the position you intend to run for, and that you meet other office specific qualifications. Obtain the necessary candidate filing paperwork. 2) If you are running for a federal position, complete the required filing forms and submit the filing forms to the Tennessee Division of Elections. Be sure to also submit a duplicate set of forms to the Tennessee Coordinator of Elections. If you are running for a state position, complete the required filing forms and submit the filing forms to the County Election Commission in which you reside. Be sure to also file duplicate forms with any and all other County Election Commissions within the district. 3) Submit the filing forms between the date in early January determined by the coordinator of elections and the first Thursday in April at noon in order to appear on either a partisan primary or as an independent on the general election ballot.
