Description

The Governor of Florida serves as the chairman of the state cabinet and chief executive of the government for the State of Florida. The Governor also assumes the role of commander-in-chief of all state military services. Primary responsibilities of the governor include: the enforcement of state laws, requesting interpretations from the Florida Supreme Court on constitutional subjects, approving or vetoing bills passed by the state legislature, drafting a balanced budget to submit to the legislature, granting pardons (with the exception of impeachment), and convening legislature. The governor also has the ability to use line-item veto for bills that relate to appropriations. A line-item veto is also referred to as a partial veto, and pronounces the ability of the governor (in specified appropriation situations) to reverse or cancel specific provisions of a bill without needing to veto the entire legislative proposal. Furthermore, recent legislation has extended the power of the governor, allowing that individual to execute more oversight than usual over agencies, and make key financial decisions regarding the recruitment of new business, if such action is deemed economically beneficial. The governor serves a four-year term, and while there is no limit on the number of times a Florida governor may serve, after serving two sequential terms, that individual must remain out of office for at least one election cycle to regain eligibility. The salary of the position is $130,273 per year.
