School boards establish a vision for the community's schools that reflects a consensus of the board, community and district staff. The school board has a wide variety of additional responsibilities, such as adopting a balanced annual budget and issuing interim financial reports, adopting the school calendar, negotiating contracts with employees, approving curriculum materials and closing or constructing schools.
Application GuidelinesIf you would like to be included on the ballot for school board, follow these three steps. 1) Contact the election supervisor for the board you're interested in. The election supervisor can provide information about the availability of filing papers and answer any questions regarding petitions or other ballot procedures. 2) Arrange to pick up required paperwork. Many first-time candidates arrange an appointment with local elections staff at this point. 3) Return your completed paperwork within the designated filing window. Candidates for this office may qualify to be on the ballot through a political party or independently. Political party candidates must qualify during the first filing window starting in April. Independent candidates may qualify during the April or June filing windows.
