Description

School Boards establish a vision for the community's schools that reflects a consensus of the board, community and district staff. The school board has a wide variety of additional responsibilities, such as adopting a balanced annual budget and issuing interim financial reports, adopting the school calendar, negotiating contracts with employees, approving curriculum materials and closing or constructing schools.

Application Guidelines
Alabama county school board elections are held at the same time as state and federal elections in early November. If you would like to be included on the ballot for county school board, follow these three steps. 1) Contact the probate office in the county where you are interested in running for school board. Probate office staff can provide information about the availability of filing papers and answer any questions regarding petitions or other ballot procedures. 2) Arrange to pick up required paperwork. Many first-time candidates arrange an appointment with the county elections staff at this point. 3) Return your completed paperwork within the designated filing window. Many candidates for this office will qualify to be on the ballot through a political party. If you are running as a political party member, you will have to meet an earlier deadline in order to participate in the primary election. Contact the party's county point person for details.
