Description

School Board Members establish a shared vision for the schools that they represent which reflects a consensus of the board, community and district staff. The school board has a wide variety of additional responsibilities, such as adopting annual budgets and issuing interim financial reports, adopting the school calendar, negotiating contracts with employees (including the hiring of superintendents), approving curriculum materials and closing or constructing schools. Rhode Island has 36 locally governed school boards which provide education to approximately 143,000 students, and the school boards can have 5, 7, or 9 members. Board members serve for four year terms, elections are held during even years, and some school board members receive a financial stipend (depending upon district).

Application Guidelines

To appear on the ballot for this position, follow these three steps. 1) Contact the local elections department within the town that you reside. The city clerk is the person that usually handles election administration. Confirm that your address qualifies you for the position you are seeking, and check to see if there are any other requirements to run. 2) File your Declaration of Candidacy for the position with the city clerk. The filing window for the Declaration of Candidacy are the last consecutive Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday within June of the year the election is held. 3) After filing your Declaration of Candidacy you will be required to submit signatures to appear on the ballot (this number can fluctuate, and it should be communicated when picking up filing papers). Submit your signatures within the designated time frame, and you will appear on the ballot for the position.
