Description
Each of the 67 counties in Florida has a publicly elected school board that oversees the public schools located in their respective counties. School boards in Florida range in size from 5 to 9 members, with boards of 5 or 7 members being the most common. Superintendents are elected in 41 out of 67 counties; superintendents in the remaining 26 counties are appointed by the board. School board members make employment and budgetary decisions for the schools within their county, establish long-term vision for the district, and provide oversight on some of the district's higher level employees. Florida contains over 4,000 schools serving over 2.5 million students, so each board plays a role in thousands of students' lives.
Application Guidelines
Florida school board elections are held at the end of August in even numbered years. If no candidate receives the majority of the vote in the August election, there is a runoff election between the top two candidates during the November election. If you would like to be included on the ballot for a Florida school board, follow these three steps. 1) Contact the county elections office responsible for the school board that you are interested in running for. They can provide information about the availability of filing papers and answer any questions regarding petitions or other ballot procedures. 2) Arrange to pick up required paperwork from the county elections office. Many first-time candidates arrange an appointment with the county elections staff at this point. 3) Return your completed paperwork within the designated filing window. For this position, the filing window is 71 to 67 days prior to the election (June 18, 2018 to June 22, 2018).Questions regarding this procedure should be directed to the Hernando County Supervisor of Elections. They can be reached via phone at (352) 754-4125 or in-person at 20 North Main Street, Room 165, Brooksville, Florida 34601.Submit application to:
