Description
The Washington State House of Representatives comprises the lower house of the bicameral Washington State Legislature. There are 98 representatives within the house, each of whom represents about 68,618 residents from their respective districts (49 in total). The Speaker of the House serves as the leader of the House and must be chosen by the majority party caucus, then elected by the rest of the House. It is the speaker's responsibility manage the floor and set the legislative agenda. Primary responsibilities of a house representative include: developing budget packages, making taxation decisions, passing legislation, and allocating spending. There are 21 standing committees within the house ranging from Capital Budget, to Environment, to Public Safety. Each representative serves on or leads various committees within the house. Additionally, the house has the exclusive authority to impeach state officials, who will then be tried by the senate. Primary issues covered in this house range from education funding, to transportation development, to climate change proposals. Each representative serves a two-year term, with no limit on the number of terms served. The salary of this position is $42,106 per year, in addition to $120 of per diem for every day in session.
