Description

The Oxnard City Council consists of an elected Mayor holding a two-year term and four councilmembers elected at large for four-year overlapping terms. After each election the Mayor appoints one of the councilmembers to serve as Mayor Pro Tem to preside over City Council functions in the Mayors absence. The City Council governs the City in a manner that promotes a sound financial base, and responds to the current and future needs and concerns of City residents and businesses. To accomplish this, the Council appoints the City Manager and City Attorney, enacts City ordinances, establishes policy for administrative staff, and approves and oversees the budget of expenditures for the City. The Council also serves as the board of the City of Oxnard Financing Authority (COFA), the Citys Community Development Commission Successor Agency, and, supplemented by two Tenant Commissioners, serves as the Citys Housing Authority.

Application Guidelines
To file for this position follow these three simple steps: 1) Contact the City Clerk at (805) 385-7803 to verify that your address qualifies for the position and that you meet any other candidacy requirements (for example, living within the district for a specified amount of time prior to the election). If you have difficulty speaking with the City Clerk, contact the Ventura County Elections Division at (805) 654-2664 for more information or assistance. 2) Obtain the correct filing papers from the City Clerk and complete the paperwork required. It is understood that first time or beginning candidates may need someone to review the paperwork with them, so it is useful to stop by the office in person during normal business hours, or arrange a time that you can speak with someone while picking up the filing papers. We suggest asking additional questions regarding filing for office (like the amount of petition signatures, filing fees, or to double check filing windows/dates). The California Secretary of State's Elections Division is also a great resource and can be reached at (916) 657-2166 or http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections 3) Submit the candidacy papers within the 113-88 day filing window prior to the election (most California elections use the 113-88 day filing window). After completing this paperwork and filing it with the elections office you will then appear on the ballot. If you have any questions regarding running for this position, contact your city or county elections department as soon as possible.
