The Fairfax County School Board is charged by the statutes of Virginia and the regulations of the Virginia Board of Education to operate the public schools of Fairfax County by setting general school policy and establishing guidelines that will ensure the proper administration of the Fairfax County Public Schools programs.The 12 School Board members are elected for four-year terms; one member represents each of the County’s nine magisterial districts, and three members serve at large. School Board members are paid a salary of $32,000 per year. The Chairman is paid an additional $2,000 per year.

Application Guidelines

To file for this position follow these three simple steps: 1) Read the candidate bulletin for the office you seek at http://www.elections.virginia.gov/candidatepac-info/candidate-bulletins/index.html. Verify that you qualify for the position. You must be a resident of the Commonwealth of Virginia for one year immediately preceding the election, and be a resident of Fairfax County at the time of filing. If seeking a district seat (rather than an at-large seat) on Fairfax County School Board, make sure you are a resident of the district you wish to represent.School board candidates may not be nominated by a party. Contact the the clerk of the school board to verify that you fulfill the requirements and to ask further questions. 2) Complete the appropriate filing papers, which can be found on the Department of Elections website here http://www.elections.virginia.gov/candidatepac-info/candidate-forms/index.html.School board candidates must complete the Certificate of Candidate Qualification, the necessary campaign finance documents, the appropriate Statement of Economic Interest form, the Declaration of Candidacy form, and the Petition of Qualified Voter form. 3) Submit these forms after January 1st of the election year and before the filing deadline in June to the General Registrar of Fairfax County PO Box 10161 Fairfax, VA 22038-8061.
