Description

The Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney is charged primarily with the prosecution of crime. This office prosecutes criminal and traffic matters in the Fairfax County General District Court, criminal and delinquency matters in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, and all felony cases in the Fairfax County Circuit Court. The office handles both the violation of county ordinances and the violation of state statutes. The Commonwealth’s Attorney serves a term of four years (find salary).

Verify that you qualify for the position. You must be a resident of the Commonwealth of Virginia for one year immediately preceding the election, and be a resident of Fairfax County at the time of filing. If seeking a district seat on the Board of Supervisors, make sure you are a resident of the district you wish to represent. Contact the clerk of the Board of Supervisors to verify that you fulfill the requirements and to ask further questions. 2) Complete the appropriate filing papers, which can be found on the Department of Elections website here http://www.elections.virginia.gov/candidatepac-info/candidate-forms/index.html. If you are seeking a county-level position (including a position on the Board of Supervisors, the Clerk of the Circuit Court, the sheriff, or the Commonwealth's Attorney), you must complete the Certificate of Candidate Qualification, the necessary campaign finance documents, the appropriate Statement of Economic Interest form, the Declaration of Candidacy form, and the Petition of Qualified Voter form. 3) Submit these forms after January 1st of the election year and before the filing deadline in June to theGeneral Registrar of Fairfax County PO Box 10161 Fairfax, VA 22038-8061.
