Description

The Fairfax County Circuit Court has concurrent jurisdiction with the General District Court over claims from $4,500 to $25,000 and exclusive original jurisdiction over monetary claims exceeding $25,000. The Circuit Court also has jurisdiction over other matters, including: attachments, adoptions, divorce proceedings, disputes concerning wills, trusts and estates, and controversies involving property. In criminal cases, the Circuit Court has jurisdiction over the trial of all felonies and of those misdemeanors that were appealed from district court or a grand jury indictment. The Circuit Court also has jurisdiction over juveniles who are charged with felonies and whose cases have been transferred or certified by the judge of a Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court for trial in Circuit Court. You must be a resident of the Commonwealth of Virginia for one year immediately preceding the election, and be a resident of Fairfax County at the time of filing. If seeking a district seat on the Board of Supervisors, make sure you are a resident of the district you wish to represent. Contact the clerk of the Board of Supervisors to verify that you fulfill the requirements and to ask further questions. 2) Complete the appropriate filing papers, which can be found on the Department of Elections website here http://www.elections.virginia.gov/candidatepac-info/candidate-forms/index.html. If you are seeking a county-level position (including a position on the Board of Supervisors, the Clerk of the Circuit Court, the sheriff, or the Commonwealth's Attorney), you must complete the Certificate of Candidate Qualification, the necessary campaign finance documents, the appropriate Statement of Economic Interest form, the Declaration of Candidacy form, and the Petition of Qualified Voter form. 3) Submit these forms after January 1st of the election year and before the filing deadline in June to theGeneral Registrar of Fairfax County PO Box 10161 Fairfax, VA 22038-8061.
