Description
As the elected legislative body of the City and County of Honolulu, the City Council has overall responsibility for the scope, direction, and financing of City and County services. The City Council, as the legislative body, establishes policy that is administered and implemented through full time staff under the Council-Manager form of government. The Council is also responsible for establishing land use policies through the General Plan and zoning regulations. Honolulu voters, by district, elect a 9-member Council to serve as the City and County's legislative and governing body. The members serve 4 year terms. A general municipal election is held every two years, alternating, between the odd and even numbered district positions each cycle.
Application Guidelines
1) Contact the Hawaii Office of Elections in order to confirm that your registered address qualifies you for the position you intend to run for and to confirm that you meet other office specific qualifications. Nomination papers are available online with more information at http://elections.hawaii.gov/candidates/candidate-filing/. 2) Complete the nomination papers including the signature requirements.The amount of signatures required varies between 15 and 25 by office. Additionally, there is an office specific filing fee. Filing fees can be reduced with a form known as an Affidavit of Compliance with Voluntary Campaign Spending Limits.
