Description

The Attorney General of Rhode Island is an elected executive position in the Rhode Island state government. The attorney general is the state's chief law enforcement officer. The department of the attorney general is responsible for the prosecution of all felony criminal cases and misdemeanor appeals brought by state law. Additionally, the attorney general represents all agencies, departments and commissions in litigation and initiates legal action where necessary to protect the interests of Rhode Island citizens. The attorney general provides legal advice to state officers and state agencies whenever requested. The attorney general is popularly elected every four years in midterm elections and cannot serve more than two full, consecutive terms in office. In their role as the state's chief legal officer, the attorney general is charged with enhancing the economic security of Rhode Island, protecting the public safety of its communities and restoring public trust in state government by fighting corruption. Specific duties include: prosecuting all felony criminal cases and misdemeanor appeals; prosecuting all misdemeanor cases brought by state law enforcement action in the state's district courts represents all state agencies, departments, and commissions in litigation; initiates legal action when necessary to protect the interests of Rhode Island citizens. The office of the attorney general is responsible for enforcing the provisions 12-1-4 through 12-1-12 of the Rhode Island general laws and operates the State Bureau of Criminal Identification. The salary for this position is $115,610/year.

Application Guidelines

To file for this position follow these three steps: 1) Contact the Rhode Island Department of State Elections Division to confirm that your registered address qualifies you for the position you intend to run for, and that you meet other office specific qualifications. Make sure you are registered to vote. Obtain the candidate filing forms. 2) Complete the candidate filing forms including a declaration of candidacy and campaign finance forms. 3) Submit the filing paperwork with the stipulated amount of signatures to the Rhode Island Department of State Elections Division. The filing period during which a candidate must file their declaration of candidacy occurs during the last consecutive Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in June. Federal position candidates file with the state and state position candidates file with their local board of canvassers. After declaring candidacy, a candidate must also submit nomination papers. Upon declaring candidacy with the appropriate filing officer, the filing officer will inform the candidate about the nomination paper timeline and the required amount of signatures needed for the office they are running for. Before submission to the Rhode Island Department of State Elections Division, the signatures must first be authenticated by the local board of canvassers in which the signatures were gathered.
