Description

The Mississippi Commissioner of Insurance is an elected state executive position in the Mississippi state government. The commissioner executes all laws related to insurance companies, corporations, associations and fraternal orders, their agents and adjusters. The commissioner also serves as State Fire Marshal and administers the Mississippi Fire Prevention Code. The duties of the commissioner are outlined on the Insurance Department website: "The Commissioner is charged with execution of all laws relative to insurance companies, corporations, associations and fraternal orders, their agents and adjusters. The duties of the Insurance Commissioner are varied and are both administrative and regulatory. The Commissioner is also the State Fire Marshal and directs the investigation of all fires of a suspicious nature. Through the State Fire Marshal Division, the Commissioner administers the Mississippi Fire Prevention Code. The Commissioner, through the Fire Service Development Division, established guidelines, use and accountability for municipal and county fire protection funds. The Commissioner administers the Liquefied Compressed Gas Equipment Law and enforces the National Fire Protection Association Code.” The salary for this position is $90,000/year.

To file for this position follow these three steps: 1) Contact the Mississippi Secretary of State Elections Division to confirm that your registered address qualifies you for the position you intend to run for, and that you meet other office specific qualifications. Obtain the correct candidacy filing paperwork. 2) Complete the required candidacy paperwork including the appropriate campaign finance forms, and if you plan to run as an independent a nominating petition form. If you plan to run as a partisan candidate please contact your local party office for further instructions as the filing window will differ from the independent candidate filing window. 3) If you plan to run as an independent candidate, submit the nominating certificate with the stipulated amount of verified signatures to the Mississippi Secretary of State Elections Division by the filing deadline. The amount of required nominating petition signatures varies by office. The filing deadline for independents is 60 days before the general election and signatures may not be collected before January 1st the year of the election.
