The Mayor of San Francisco is elected at large by the voters, serving a two-year term. The mayor acts as a chief executive officer of the city and county, because San Francisco is the only lawful charter city and charter county in California, with the mayor serving as a county executive and the city council also serving as the board of supervisors.The mayor is the official head of the city; the mayor provides leadership in policy implementation that has a purpose of meeting the needs of the people. The mayor of San Francisco is a member of the city council and can make recommendations, as well as appoint and remove members from board and commission positions. The mayor is also responsible to review the annual departmental budget, and the mayor submits the annual budget to the city council. The average salary for the Mayor of San Francisco is $246,000/year, and the mayor is limited to serving two four-year terms.

Application Guidelines
To file for this position follow these three simple steps: 1) Contact the county board of elections office of your official residence to verify that you qualify for the position. All candidate filings for all California positions are handled by the county elections office of the candidate's official residence. You should also verify that you meet any other requirements (for example, living within the district for a specified amount of time prior to the election). Most county elections departments understand that first time candidates may have some additional questions or concerns, and they will answer questions when you are picking up your paperwork, or will allow you to schedule an appointment to speak with someone. 2) Obtain the appropriate filing papers from the county elections office and complete the paperwork required. If there is any difficulty in connecting with this office, contact the California Secretary of State's Elections Division at (916) 657-2166 or http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections to help obtain the correct contact information for your county elections department. 3) Submit the candidacy papers within the 172-147 day filing window prior to the election. If you have any questions regarding running for this position, contact the San Francisco Board of Elections at (415) 554-4375 or http://sfgov.org/elections/ or the California Secretary of State Elections Division as soon as possible. There is a filing fee of $500, however if 1,000 signatures are gathered, the fee is waived. The filing fee is reduced by .50 for each valid signature gathered and signatured must be submitted within the specified window. The period for submitting petitions in lieu of the filing fee is 4/2/2019 to 5/27/2019
