Description

The Governor of the State of Wyoming is an elected constitutional officer, the head of the executive branch and the highest state office in Wyoming. The Governor is popularly elected every four years by a plurality and is term limited to two four-year terms in any 16 year span. The Governor is the commander-in-chief of the state's military forces and upholds and executes all laws faithfully. The governor does not have the power to create a law but does have the power to veto or reject a proposed law, subject to a majority override of the legislature. He has a similar veto over appropriations. The governor is responsible for presenting revenue and expenditure data along with a state budget recommendation to the Wyoming Legislature. Other duties and privileges of the office include: Addressing the General Assembly at the commencement of each session concerning the state of the state and making recommendations for legislation; Transacting all civil and military business of the state and expediting all measures the legislature has resolved upon; Remitting fines and forfeitures, and granting reprieves, pardons, and commutations, excepting cases of treasons, where her power is limited to suspending the sentence pending the legislature's action; Filling all vacancies not otherwise provided for. The salary for this position is $105,000/year.

To file for this position follow these three steps: 1) Contact the Wyoming Secretary of State Elections Division to confirm that your registered address qualifies you for the position you intend to run for, and that you meet other office specific qualifications. Obtain the correct candidacy filing paperwork. 2) Complete the required candidacy paperwork including the appropriate campaign finance forms, and if you plan to run as an independent a petition for nomination. If you plan to run as a partisan candidate please contact your local party office for further instructions as the filing window will differ from the independent candidate filing window. 3) If you plan to run as an independent (“unaffiliated”) candidate, submit the petition for nomination with the stipulated amount of verified signatures to the Wyoming Secretary of State Elections Division by the filing deadline. The amount of required petition for nomination signatures varies by office. The filing deadline for independents is 70 days before the general election.
