Description

The Comptroller of the State of Maryland is the chief financial officer of the government of Maryland. The comptroller is elected to a four-year term during the federal midterm election and is not subject to term limits. The comptroller's main duties are to collect all of the revenues from state programs, to provide information technology services for most of the state agencies, and to regulate the state's alcohol, tobacco and motor fuel industries. The officer also serves as a member of many state boards and commissions, such as the board of revenue estimates, the board of public works and the board of trustees of the State retirement and pension system. Additional responsibilities of the office include registering wills, performing compliance audits for taxpayers, handling delinquent tax collection and enforcing license and unclaimed property laws. The comptroller oversees agency efforts to publicize forgotten bank accounts, insurance benefits and other unclaimed assets of state taxpayers. The salary for this position is $125,000/year.

Application Guidelines
In order to appear on the ballot for this position, follow these three steps. 1) Contact the Maryland State Board of Elections to confirm that your address is in the district for which you are seeking and that you pass any residency or professional requirements needed. 2) Obtain the candidacy filing paperwork during the appropriate period. In Maryland the candidate filing period begins the last day of February during the year preceding the election. Candidates will also be required to file financial disclosure statements on behalf of the campaign. 3) Candidates must file their paperwork by the second to last day of February during the year of the election. If candidates miss this deadline they will not appear on the ballot for the general election or primary (if applicable).
