Description

The Vermont State House of Representatives is the lower house of the bicameral Vermont State Legislature. The House has 150 members, who each represent one district, which results in about 4,100 constituents per representative. Primary responsibilities of a house representative include, developing budget packages, making taxation decisions, passing legislation, allocating spending, and redistricting in collaboration with other house members and the state senate. Additionally, the house has the exclusive authority to impeach state officials, who will then be tried by the senate. A house member serves a two-year term, with no limit on the number of terms served. The salary of the position is $676.56 per week while in legislative session, along with a $110 day per diem for lodging for overnight stays, or $61 day per diem for meals and mileage.

To file for this position follow these three steps: 1) Contact the Vermont Secretary of State Elections Division to confirm that your registered address qualifies you for the position you intend to run for, and that you meet other office specific qualifications. Obtain the correct candidacy filing paperwork. 2) Complete the required candidacy paperwork including the appropriate campaign finance forms, a consent of candidate form and (if you plan to run as an independent) a nominating petition. The amount of required nominating petition signatures varies by office. The filing window for independents runs from the 4th Monday in April until 5pm on the Thursday preceding the primary election.
