Description

A Tennessee State Senator serves in the upper house of the bicameral Tennessee State Legislature. Tennessee has 33 senators, who each represent one district within the state. Each senator represents about 192,306 constituents from their respective districts. Primary responsibilities of a senator include, developing budget packages, making taxation decisions, passing legislation, allocating spending, and redistricting in collaboration with other senators and the house of representatives. Additionally, the senate has the exclusive authority to try officials impeached by the house in addition to authorizing certain executive appointments. Leadership in the senate is guided by the Senate President, who, after being chosen by the majority party caucus, and elected by the entire senate body, is charged with assigning each senator to various committees and leadership positions. A Tennessee senator serves a four-year term, with no limit on the number of terms served. The salary of the position is $7,200 per year in addition to a per diem of $190 for every day in session.

1) Contact the Tennessee Division of Elections to confirm that your registered address qualifies you for the position you intend to run for, and that you meet other office specific qualifications. Obtain the necessary candidate filing paperwork. 2) If you are running for a federal position, complete the required filing forms and submit the filing forms to the Tennessee Division of Elections. Be sure to also submit a duplicate set of forms to the Tennessee Coordinator of Elections. If you are running for a state position, complete the required filing forms and submit the filing forms to the County Election Commission in which you reside. Be sure to also file duplicate forms with any and all other County Election Commissions within the district. 3) Submit the filing forms between the date in early January determined by the coordinator of elections and the first Thursday in April at noon in order to appear on either a partisan primary or as an independent on the general election ballot.
