Description

The Rhode Island State House of Representatives is the lower house of the bicameral Rhode Island State Legislature. The House has 75 members, who each represent one district, which results in about 14,034 constituents per representative. Primary responsibilities of a house representative include, developing budget packages, making taxation decisions, passing legislation, allocating spending, and redistricting in collaboration with other house members and the state senate. Additionally, the house has the exclusive authority to impeach state officials, who will then be tried by the senate. A house member serves a two-year term, with no limit on the number of terms served. The salary of the position is $15,079 per year (no per diem).

Application Guidelines
To file for this position follow these three steps: 1) Contact the Rhode Island Department of State Elections Division to confirm that your registered address qualifies you for the position you intend to run for, and that you meet other office specific qualifications. Make sure you are registered to vote. Obtain the candidate filing forms. 2) Complete the candidate filing forms including a declaration of candidacy and campaign finance forms. 3) Submit the filing paperwork with the stipulated amount of signatures to the Rhode Island Department of State Elections Division. The filing period during which a candidate must file their declaration of candidacy occurs during the last consecutive Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in June. Federal position candidates file with the state and state position candidates file with their local board of canvassers. After declaring candidacy, a candidate must also submit nomination papers. Upon declaring candidacy with the appropriate filing officer, the filing officer will inform the candidate about the nomination paper timeline and the required amount of signatures needed for the office they are running for. Before submission to the Rhode Island Department of State Elections Division, the signatures must first be authenticated by the local board of canvassers in which the signatures were gathered.
