Description

An Oregon State Senator serves in the upper house of the bicameral Oregon State Legislature. Oregon has 30 senators, who each represent one district within the state. Each senator represents about 114,000 constituents from their respective districts. Primary responsibilities of a senator include, developing budget packages, making taxation decisions, passing legislation, allocating spending, and redistricting in collaboration with other senators and the house of representatives. Additionally, the senate has the exclusive authority to try officials impeached by the house in addition to authorizing certain executive appointments. Leadership in the senate is guided by the Senate President, who, after being chosen by the majority party caucus, and elected by the entire senate body, is charged with assigning each senator to various committees and leadership positions. An Oregon senator serves a four-year term, with no limit on the number of terms served. The salary of the position is $23,052 per year in addition to a $129 per diem for every day in session.

Application Guidelines
To file for this position follow these three steps: 1) Contact the Oregon Secretary of State Elections Division to confirm that your registered address qualifies you for the position you intend to run for, and that you meet other office specific qualifications. If you plan to run as a nonaffiliated “independent” candidate request approval to circulate petitions. 2) Upon receiving approval to circulate petitions, the Oregon Secretary of State Elections Division will inform you of the required number of signatures and the filing deadline. Gather signatures and complete candidacy filing and campaign finance forms. If you plan to run as a partisan candidate, the filing details are different, please contact your local party office for further instructions. 3) Submit the filing paperwork with the stipulated amount of signatures to the Oregon Secretary of State Elections Division. Before submission to the Oregon Secretary of State Elections Division, the signatures must first be authenticated by the county election office from the county in which the signatures were gathered. The filing period runs from the 15th day after the primary election until the 70th day before the general election (OR 249.722). The primary election is held on the 3rd Tuesday in May.
