Description

The New Jersey General Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral New Jersey State Legislature. The Assembly has 80 members, who each represent one district, which results in about 210,359 constituents per representative. Primary responsibilities of a house representative include, developing budget packages, making taxation decisions, passing legislation, allocating spending, and redistricting in collaboration with other house members and the state senate. Additionally, the house has the exclusive authority to impeach state officials, who will then be tried by the senate. A house member serves a two-year term, with no limit on the number of terms served. The salary of the position is $49,000 per year.

Application Guidelines
To file for this position follow these three steps: 1) Contact the New Jersey Division of Elections to confirm that your registered address qualifies you for the position you intend to run for, and that you meet other office specific qualifications. Obtain the correct candidacy filing paperwork. 2) Complete the required candidacy paperwork including, a certificate of acceptance, an oath of allegiance, nominating petitions, campaign finance forms and other office specific requirements. Petition signature requirements vary by office. Inquire into primary election details if you plan to run as a partisan candidate. File these papers with the appropriate filing officer. 3) Submit the filing paperwork with the required amount of signatures to the New Jersey Division of Elections. If you plan to run as a partisan candidate, the filing paperwork is due the 64th day before the primary election. If you plan to run as an independent, the filing paperwork is due the day before the primary election at 4:00pm. The New Jersey primary election is always held the first Tuesday following the first Monday in June.
