Description

A Missouri State Senator serves in the upper house of the bicameral Missouri State Legislature. Missouri has 34 senators, who each represent one district within the state. Each senator represents about 174,000 constituents from their respective districts. Primary responsibilities of a senator include, developing budget packages, making taxation decisions, passing legislation, allocating spending, and redistricting in collaboration with other senators and the house of representatives. Additionally, the senate has the exclusive authority to try officials impeached by the house in addition to authorizing certain executive appointments. Leadership in the senate is guided by the Senate President, who, after being chosen by the majority party caucus, and elected by the entire senate body, is charged with assigning each senator to various committees and leadership positions. A Missouri senator serves a four-year term, with a limit of two terms. The salary of the position is $35,915 per year in addition to a $103.20 per diem for every day in session.

Application Guidelines
1) Contact the Missouri Secretary of State's Office Elections Division to confirm that your registered address qualifies you for the position you intend to run for, that you meet other office specific qualifications and inquire as to if the application has a fee. 2) Complete the filing forms and file them with the Missouri Secretary of State's Office Elections Division. Forms differ for partisan and nonpartisan candidates. Partisan candidates will likely participate in a primary while independent candidates must acquire a stipulated amount of petitions signatures. Nonpartisan positions file differently as well. 3) File the filing forms with the Missouri Secretary of State Elections Division. If you plan to run in a partisan primary, the filing window is from February 23rd, 2016 to March 29th, 2016. If you plan to run as an independent, the deadline to file is August 1st, 2016, the fifteenth Monday immediately preceding the general election. The nonpartisan position filing window for the November general elections is from July 19th, 2016 to August 23rd, 2016.
