Description

A Michigan State Representative legislates proposed changes to state laws by writing new laws or amending laws already in place. This often requires taking input from various interest groups to reach compromise. The creation of law requires creative aptitude and the practice of thorough research. A State Representative's research includes how the proposed law could affect the area he or she represents and if the proposed solution is politically, economically and socially feasible. At the state level, representatives often represent a single county or city. Being a State Representative requires affability as some of the research may involve meeting with the person from the community or committee members who drafted the proposal. Once introduced into the legislative chamber, these proposals are more commonly known as a bills. State Representatives serve 2 year terms in the lower state house legislative body and earn a salary of $71,685/year as well as a $10,800/year expense allowance.
