Description

The Kentucky State House of Representatives is the lower house of the bicameral Kentucky State Legislature. The House has 100 members, who each represent one district, which results in about 44,130 constituents per representative. Primary responsibilities of a house representative include, developing budget packages, making taxation decisions, passing legislation, allocating spending, and redistricting in collaboration with other house members and the state senate. Additionally, the house has the exclusive authority to impeach state officials, who will then be tried by the senate. A house member serves a two-year term, with no limit on the number of terms served. The salary of the position is $186.73 per day in addition to a per diem of $141.20 for every day in session.

Application Guidelines
1) Contact the Kentucky State Board of Elections to confirm that your registered address qualifies you for the position you intend to run for, and that you meet other office specific qualifications. Obtain the required filing forms. 2) Complete the required filing forms and submit the filing forms to the Kentucky State Board of Elections. The required forms include a statement of candidacy, campaign finance forms, nominating petitions and other office specific forms. 3) To run as an independent, you must file a statement of candidacy by April 1st. If April 1st falls on a nonbusiness day, the deadline will be the following business day. Nominating petitions are due the second Tuesday in August in order to qualify for the ballot. Petition signature requirements vary by office. If you plan to run as a candidate for one of the established political parties, contact the Kentucky State Board of Elections or the party office for information about the filing procedures necessary to compete in the party primary.
