Description

Made of 21 members, the Delaware State Senate is the upper house of the Delaware General Assembly. Each Senate member represents a district of approximately 42,759 residents, serving 4 year terms or 2 year terms not subject to term limits. In order to accommodate the ten-year cycle of reapportionment, the terms of office of the several Senators are staggered so that ten Senators are elected to terms of two years at the first biennial general election following reapportionment, followed by two four-year terms, and eleven Senators are elected at the said election for two four-year terms, followed by a two-year term.The Lieutenant Governor of Delaware serves as the President of the Senate but only casts a vote to break ties. A President Pro Tempore elected by the majority party presides over the Senate when the Lieutenant Governor is not present. The Delaware Senate as 23 standing committees that range from Administrative Services/Elections Committee to Veterans Affairs Committee. The Senate can confirm or reject appointments made by the Governor to the state cabinet, commisssions, boards, or justices to the Delaware Supreme Court. Primary responsibilities of a senator include: developing budget packages, making taxation decisions, passing legislation, allocating spending, and redistricting in collaboration with other senators and the house of representatives. The yearly salary for a senator is $44,541.

If you plan to run as an unaffiliated candidate, you must also circulate a petition to appear on the ballot. If you plan to run as a party candidate please contact your local party headquarters for more information. Party candidate forms and deadlines differ from some unaffiliated candidate forms and deadlines. 3) Collect the stipulated number of signatures between January 1st and July 15th and submit the completed petitions to the State of Delaware Department of Elections.
