Description

The Shadow Member of the U.S. Senate represents Washington, D.C. in the U.S. senate, but is not officially sworn or seated by the Senate. Shadow Senators work to gain full representation in Congress, in addition to working alongside the District’s U.S. Delegate, Mayor, and Council to represent the interests of local residents on the Federal level. Washington D.C. elects two Shadow Senators to serve four-year terms, with no limit on the number of terms served. This position is unpaid.

Application Guidelines
To file for this position follow these three simple steps: 1) Contact the District of Columbia Board of Elections Office to verify that you qualify for the position. All candidate filings are handled by District of Columbia Board of Elections Office. You should also verify that you meet any other requirements (for example, resided and been domiciled in the District of Columbia for one year preceding the general or special election or residing in the ward from which nominated). Most elections board offices understand that first time candidates may have some additional questions or concerns, and they will answer questions when you are picking up your paperwork, or will allow you to schedule an appointment to speak with someone. 2) Obtain the appropriate filing papers from District of Columbia Board of Elections office and complete the paperwork required. If there is any difficulty in connecting with this office, contact the DC Board of Elections at (202) 727-2525 or https://www.dcboee.org/election_info/index.asp to help obtain the correct contact information for your elections department. 3) Filing papers must be submitted between 120 and 90 days prior to the election. Candidates must compete in the general primary to advance to the general election.
