Description

The U.S. House of Representatives Delegate for Washington, D.C., serves as a non-voting member in the U.S. house of representatives. The House is comprised of 435 voting members, in addition to 6 non-voting members who represent various U.S. territories in addition to D.C. The primary responsibilities of those delegates include those of a voting House member, however, the delegate is restricted to only voting in House committees in which they are a member. Delegates are also permitted to introduce legislation. Delegates serve a two-year term with no limit on the number of terms served. The salary of this position is $174,000 per year.

To file for this position follow these three simple steps: 1) Contact the District of Columbia Board of Elections Office to verify that you qualify for the position. All candidate filings are handled by District of Columbia Board of Elections Office. You should also verify that you meet any other requirements (for example, resided and been domiciled in the District of Columbia for one year preceding the general or special election or residing in the ward from which nominated). Most elections board offices understand that first time candidates may have some additional questions or concerns, and they will answer questions when you are picking up your paperwork, or will allow you to schedule an appointment to speak with someone. 2) Obtain the appropriate filing papers from District of Columbia Board of Elections office and complete the paperwork required. Candidates must compete in the general primary to advance to the general election.
