Description

The Arizona House of Representatives comprises the lower house of the bicameral Arizona State Legislature. There are 60 representatives within the house, each of whom represents about 106,534 residents from their respective districts (30 in total). The Speaker of the House serves as the leader of the House and must be chosen by the majority party caucus, then elected by the rest of the House. It is the speaker’s responsibility manage the floor and set the legislative agenda. Primary responsibilities of a house representative include: developing budget packages, making taxation decisions, passing legislation, and allocating spending. There are 19 standing committees within the house ranging from Appropriations, to Education, to Transportation. Each representative serves on or leads various committees within the house. Additionally, the house has the exclusive authority to impeach state officials, who will then be tried by the senate. Primary issues covered in this house range from managing the budget deficit, education funding, and taxation. Each representative serves a two-year term, with a limit of four terms. The salary of this position is $24,000 per year, in addition to $25 of per diem for every day in session.
