Description

The Illinois State Senate is comprised of 59 members, who together, encompass the upper house of the state legislature. Each district has one senator, which equates to about 217,468 constituents per elected official. Along with the house, the senate considers proposed laws, resolutions, and amendments, in addition to appropriation of all funds for the operation for the state government. Important issues discussed in the Illinois senate recently include, a potential income tax increase, a statewide minimum wage, and federal healthcare funding. For more detailed discussions, senators are assigned to various standing committees (26 in total) that handle matters such as agriculture, finance, and education. The senate has the exclusive right to try all impeachment charges against a state official, while the house must bring the impeachment charges against said official. Each senator serves a term of two years, and there is no limit on the number of terms served. The total salary of the position is estimated at $67,836 a year in addition to a $111 allowance provided to each senator for every day in session.

Application Guidelines
To run as an independent candidate for the Illinois General Assembly (State Senators and State Representative) a candidate must file the required paperwork between 141 days and 134 days prior to the general election date. Paperwork is submitted to the Illinois State Board of Elections in Springfield, Illinois and the filing petition can be acquired from the Illinois State Board of Elections. Candidates interested in running should contact the Board of Elections as soon as possible to verify that their address is in the correct district that they are seeking to run for, and to arrange receipt of the necessary filing paperwork.
