Description
The Seattle City Council consists of nine individuals with the authority to create City policies, public regulations, and budgets in the form of ordinances. The Seattle City Council passes all legislation related to the city's police, library, fire departments, parks, and public utilities. City ordinances must comply with the United States and Washington State constitutions, the general laws of the City and State, and the City Charter. The Council may also offer collective statements in the form of resolutions, which are expressions of policy or intent, not law. The Council authorizes public improvements and expenditures, provides for public safety and health, adopts regulations, levies taxes, controls the finances and property of the City, and performs many related legislative tasks. Currently, the City Councilors from Districts 8 and 9 are elected at large, but both seats will be transitioning into representing districts when they are up for reelection in 2017. Following that election, they will be elected by district for four year terms. Seattle City Councilors earn a yearly salary of approximately $117,000.
Application Guidelines
The filing window for this position begins the Monday two weeks prior to Memorial Day and ends on the Friday of that week (5 days). Candidacy filing papers can be acquired at and are submitted to either the county elections office or the Secretary of State’s Office in Olympia. For non-partisan offices, if there is only two candidates filed for a position they will run against each other in the November election. If more than two candidates file for a non-partisan office, than the non-partisan office will go through the August primary and the top two vote getters will advance to the November election for the seat. For a partisan office, the candidates will run in the August primary even if only two people are participating. This may create scenarios where the same candidates participate for the same seat in the August primary and November election.
