Description

Public library boards are elected to help set the overall policy and goals of the library they serve. Libraries offer things far beyond books, as they host cultural events, provide internet access, and they often host civic events. Library boards often work with city councils on adopting budgets and they may also work together to hire the library's executive director, who is in charge of the day-to-day library operations. Depending on the size of the district, the library board may oversee one local library, or in larger communities, have several branches to help administer. The board of trustees are elected at large by the district with staggered elections every even year. The board may select among its members to serve in positions of leadership. The board is responsible for representing the public interest, establishing responsible policies, hiring and evaluating the superintendent, ensuring fiscal sustainability, and advocating for the district.
