With nearly 900 attorneys and more than 1,500 employees, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office is the second largest prosecutor's office in the nation, second only to Los Angeles County. The Office is responsible for the prosecution of all misdemeanor and felony crimes committed in Cook County, one of the largest counties in the United States. In addition to direct criminal prosecution, Assistant State's Attorneys file legal actions to enforce child support orders, litigate to protect consumers and the elderly from exploitation, and assist thousands of victims of sexual assault and domestic violence each year. The State's Attorney also serves as legal counsel for the government of Cook County. The Office is divided into seven bureaus: Criminal Prosecutions, Juvenile Justice, Narcotics, Special Prosecutions, Civil Actions, Investigations and Administrative Services.

Application Guidelines
To run for this position you must contact the County Clerk's Elections Division in which you reside, or the Illinois State Board of Elections. Be aware that the filing window is typically only one week long, however the period for circulating petitions for signatures and preparing your paperwork is much longer (typically 90 days). If you are considering running, contact the County Clerk as soon as possible to verify that you are eligible to run for this position, and to clarify the requirements for running (petition signatures, filing fees, etc.) The County Clerks and the State Board of Elections are the administrators for the elections and their purpose is to help voters and candidates, so contact them as soon as possible.
