Description

The New York City Mayor is the Chief Executive Officer of one of the largest cities in the world. The mayor is the public face of city government and often speaks on behalf of the public. The mayor appoints all heads of New York City departments and officials not elected by law, and has the power to remove appointed officials. The mayor is responsible for the overall effectiveness of city government and operations, and the mayor submits an annual budget to the New York City Council to fund these programs. Legislation created by the New York City Council does not become law until signed by the mayor, and the mayor holds veto power to reject legislation. The New York City Mayor serves terms of four years and is term limited to two terms. The mayor earns an annual salary of $225,000/year, which includes benefits.

Application Guidelines

To file for this position, follow these three steps: 1) Contact the New York City Board of Elections to confirm that your registered address qualifies for the position that you intend to run for, and that you meet any other qualifications. 2) Pick up the nominating petitions at the nearest New York City Board of Elections office (there is at least one located in each borough) so that you can gather the required amount of signatures (7500 for this position). You have a six week window to gather the required signatures and submit them to the New York City Board of Elections, which is from July 11, 2017 until August 22, 2017, and the General Election will be held on November 7, 2017. 3) After your signatures are submitted and accepted by the New York City Board of Elections you still must submit paperwork indicating that you accept the nomination. Not taking care of this final step will keep you off the ballot, so make sure that it is completed! The Board of Elections will issue the paperwork for accepting the nomination when your signatures are submitted. You will be an official candidate and appear on the ballot if you follow these simple steps. Please note that these instructions are for an independent candidate. If you would like to run as a candidate of one of the major parties (Democrat, Republican, Green, Working Families, etc.) you will have to adhere to a different timeline that takes place earlier in the year.
