Description

The Los Angeles City Controller is an elected citywide official who serves as Los Angeles's auditor and general accountant. Often described as "the taxpayers' watchdog," the controller oversees a team responsible for: conducting independent audits, managing the city's payroll and disbursements, preparing reports on the city's finances, providing information about the city's finances and operations online, and focusing on modernization, management and metrics. This position is often elected in a sequence of two elections, the first being a "primary election" held in March. If a candidate receives a majority of the votes (a majority being 50% + 1) in the March primary, the candidate wins the seat. If no candidate wins a majority, the top two vote getters advance to an election in May, called the "runoff election" and the candidate with the most votes in the May election wins the seat. The Los Angeles City Controller earns a salary of approximately $203,000/year and also receives benefits.

Application Guidelines
To file for this position follow these three steps. 1) Contact the Los Angeles City Clerk to verify that your address qualifies for the position and that you meet any other requirements (like living in the district for a certain period of time). 2) Arrange to obtain the filing documents from the clerk/secretary's office. It is understood that first time or beginning candidates may need someone to review the paperwork with them, so it is useful to stop by the office in person during normal business hours, or arrange a time that you can speak with someone while picking up the filing papers. 3) Submit the filing papers and any other necessary documents to the city clerk/secretary during the required timeframe. The filing window for this position is 120-115 days prior to the election (meaning the filing window is only five days). Candidacy filing papers can be acquired at and are submitted to the Los Angeles City Clerk's office, which can be reached by phone at (213) 978-0444 or [email protected]
