Description

The Long Beach Mayor is elected at large for a four year term. The mayor represents both the government and the community as a whole, and is the presiding officer and a regular member of the Long Beach City Council. The city council and mayor have appointment authority for the managerial positions of a city, such as city manager, police chief and city attorney (unless these positions are directly elected by the public), and the city council traditionally appoints citizens to various advisory committees. The City of Long Beach is a full-service city, which means it provides nearly all of its own municipal services, such as: municipal water, animal control, a Gas and Oil Department, the Long Beach Health & Human Services Department, sanitation and recycling services through the Environmental Services Bureau in the Public Works Department, police department, fire department, and other traditional city services. The City of Long Beach employees nearly 6,000 full and part-time personnel in approximately 700 different job classifications. The Mayor of Long Beach earns a salary of approximately $128,000/year.

Application Guidelines
To file for this position follow these three steps. 1) Contact the City Clerk or City Secretary to verify that your address qualifies for the position and that you meet any other requirements (like living in the district for a certain period of time). 2) Arrange to obtain the filing documents from the clerk/secretary's office. It is understood that first time or beginning candidates may need someone to review the paperwork with them, so it is useful to stop by the office in person during normal business hours, or arrange a time that you can speak with someone while picking up the filing papers. 3) Submit the filing papers and any other necessary documents to the city clerk/secretary during the required timeframe. The filing window for this position is 113-88 days prior to the election. Candidacy filing papers can be acquired at and are submitted to the Long Beach City Clerk's office, which can be reached by phone at (562) 570-6101 or [email protected]
