Description

The City Council is composed of members elected from the city's residents to usually (but not always) serve four-year terms. As the cities legislative body, the City Council is responsible for the oversight of implementation of programs and services provided by the city. As the cities main legislative body, the City Council frequently creates and passes the annual budget. The City Council has appointment authority for positions such as City Manager, Police Chief, and City Attorney. The City Council also appoints citizens to various advisory committees (such as planning or zoning commissions). The City Council may elect leadership positions within the council, such as President, Chairperson, or Mayor Pro Team, which are usually held for one year terms.

To file for this position follow these three steps: 1) Contact the city or township clerk to confirm that your registered address qualifies you for the position you intend to run for, and that you meet other office specific qualifications. *Please note: runforoffice.org lists the next election as the potential primary election. Primary elections are scheduled, but only held at the discretion of the municipal clerk. Inquire with the clerk as to if the primary election will be held. 2) Complete the required candidacy paperwork including petition requirements, a filing fee, campaign finance forms and other office specific requirements. Next file these papers with the city/village/township clerk. 3) Submit the filing paperwork by the filing window deadline to the city or township clerk in order to appear on the primary ballot in August and/or on the general election ballot in November.
