The sheriff-collector serves as both the chief law enforcement officer and the collector of property taxes within the county. As the head of county law enforcement, the sheriff-collector typically enforces the law in unincorporated areas within the county, but also will sometimes provide law enforcement services to municipalities that do not have their own police departments. The sheriff-collector is in charge of county jails, and is sometimes called upon to serve subpoenas, protection orders, or eviction notices. The sheriff-collector also bills and collects county property taxes.
