Description

The City Council is the legislative body of the City of Jacksonville's consolidated government and is responsible for making the laws that govern our way of life. There are 19 city council members who are elected to four-year terms. 14 of the councilors are elected from a single district while the rest of the five are elected at-large by the county. All services that would normally be provided by a county government are provided by the city of Jacksonville.

Application Guidelines
To file for this position, follow these three steps: 1) Decide whether you would like to appear on the ballot via petition signatures or paying the filing fee for office (this amount fluctuates according to position, but the County Elections dept or City Clerk’s office will know the cost). If you are going to collect signatures, you must first file the Appointment of Campaign Treasurer and Designation of Campaign Depository (Form DS-DE 9) with the elections department. Any signatures on petitions dating prior to the filing date of this form are invalid. 2) Candidates collecting signatures may download the blank petition form at http://dos.myflorida.com/elections/forms-publications/forms/. Petition forms must be reproduced ONLY with the original wording and format and must be on paper between 3"x5" and 8 1/2"x11" in size. 3) Candidates must submit valid signatures at least 28 days prior to the first day of the qualifying period. This year, the deadline for submitting signatures is May 23rd at noon, and the alternative deadline (without signatures, paying the filing fee) would be the filing window between the 120th and 116th prior to the primary, which this year is between June 20th and June 24th. Potential candidates should note that there is a considerable amount of paperwork to complete and while not impossible, it would be incredibly difficult to appear on the last day of the filing window and have the paperwork in order, so we strongly recommend speaking with the elections filing officer as soon as possible and seeing if a 10-15 minute appointment can be made to go over the procedure.
