Description

The board of commissioners leads the county government—passing legislation and administering services and programs. Commissioners approve budgets, hire staff, and set policy. The board may elect some of its members to leadership positions, such as president or chairperson, which are usually held for one-year terms.

Application Guidelines
If you would like to be included on the ballot for county office, follow these three steps. 1) Contact the Bureau of Elections at the Secretary of State's Office. The bureau can provide information about the availability of filing papers and answer questions regarding nominating petitions and other ballot procedures. 2) Arrange to pick up required paperwork. 3) Return your completed paperwork within the designated filing window. As a candidate for Maine county office, you will file with the Secretary of State, but you will need to have petition signatures certified by the applicable registrar of voters by May 25, before the filing deadline. Party candidates will need to meet earlier deadlines to participate in the primary election.
