Description

The sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer for the county. The sheriff oversees the county’s law enforcement department, including deputies and administrative support. County sheriffs typically enforce the law in unincorporated areas within a county, but they also will sometimes provide law enforcement services to municipalities that do not have their own police departments. County sheriffs are in charge of county jails. They are sometimes called upon to serve subpoenas, protection orders, and eviction notices.

Application Guidelines
If you would like to be included on the ballot for county office, follow these three steps. 1) Contact the county clerk. The clerk can provide information about the availability of filing papers and answer questions regarding nominating petitions and other ballot procedures. 2) Arrange to pick up required paperwork. 3) Return your completed paperwork within the designated filing window. The filing deadline shown is for independent candidates. Candidates wishing to earn a political party's nomination will need to meet earlier deadlines to participate in the primary or committee nominating meeting. Independent candidates file petitions with the Vermont Secretary of State's office at 128 State Street, Montpelier, VT 05633, rather than their local county clerk, below.
