Description

The high bailiff fulfills the sheriff's duties in cases where the sheriff is deemed unfit to do so—serving papers the sheriff is legally incapable of serving, arresting the sheriff if necessary, and acting as sheriff if the sheriff's office is vacant. During most terms of office, the high bailiff will not be called on to perform any of these functions.

Application Guidelines
If you would like to be included on the ballot for county office, follow these three steps. 1) Contact the county clerk. The clerk can provide information about the availability of filing papers and answer questions regarding nominating petitions and other ballot procedures. 2) Arrange to pick up required paperwork. 3) Return your completed paperwork within the designated filing window. The filing deadline shown is for independent candidates. Candidates wishing to earn a political party's nomination will need to meet earlier deadlines to participate in the primary or committee nominating meeting. Independent candidates file petitions with the Vermont Secretary of State's office at 128 State Street, Montpelier, VT 05633, rather than their local county clerk, below.
