Description

The sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer for the county. The sheriff oversees the county’s law enforcement department, including deputies and administrative support. County sheriffs typically enforce the law in unincorporated areas within a county, but they also will sometimes provide law enforcement services to municipalities that do not have their own police departments. County sheriffs are in charge of county jails, and are sometimes called upon to serve subpoenas, protection orders, and eviction notices.

Application Guidelines
If you would like to be included on the ballot for county office, follow these three steps. 1) Contact the county department of elections. The department can provide information about the availability of filing papers and answer questions regarding nominating petitions and other ballot procedures. 2) Arrange to pick up required paperwork. 3) Return your completed paperwork within the designated filing window. September 1 is the deadline to file as a candidate unaffiliated with any party. Democrat and Republican candidates must adhere to an earlier deadline in July, minor party candidates must be nominated by August 1, and unaffiliated candidates may not circulate petitions to get on the ballot after July 15.
