Description

The Harris County Attorney's office lists as its responsibilities and activities: using civil enforcement to protect neighborhoods, clean up the environment, and shut down illegal enterprises; protects children and the elderly through our representation of state and county agencies; defends Harris County when lawsuits are filed against it; pursues claims and collects revenue when the County is owed money; advises elected officials and prepares contracts for Harris County. The Harris County Attorney's Office represents the County, its departments, elected and appointed officials, and employees in all civil matters that involve county business. Our Office also represents the Harris County Hospital District, the Harris County Flood Control District, the Harris County Appraisal Review Board, and the Greater 911 Emergency Network, which are separate legal entities. The Harris County Attorney's Office represents the State of Texas in mental health commitments and children's protective services cases that are within the county's jurisdiction. In addition to these duties, the Harris County Attorney's Office assists in administration of the guardianship program, which cares for elderly and disabled individuals in Harris County who are unable to care for themselves.

Application Guidelines
1) Contact the Harris County Elections Office to confirm that your registered address qualifies you for the position you intend to run for, and that you meet other office specific qualifications. 2) Complete the Declaration of Intent to Run and submit the application by the filing window. Once the March primary has been held, independent candidates may start circulating their nominating petitions, which are due to the County Judge in June (the exact date will vary depending on year). Signers of the nominating petition can not have voted in the March primary, and the requirement is 500 signatures to appear for most positions on the ballot. Potential candidates should speak with the Harris County Elections Department as soon as possible to verify signature requirements and the filing window. 3) Submit the Declaration of Intent to Run within 108-78 days prior to the primary election and submit the nominating petition and application to the County Judge.
