Description

The Secretary of State of South Dakota is an elected executive position in the South Dakota state government. The secretary is responsible for maintaining official public documents, registering state lobbyists and administrating corporations, among other duties. The secretary also serves as the Chief Elections Officer and Chairman of the State Board of Elections. The secretary of state is the custodian of the state's official documents and legislative documents. This includes gubernatorial appointments to boards, commissions, agency offices, bills, journals and state Senate confirmations. Other duties and responsibilities include: maintaining a registrar of all lobbyists; commissioning and maintaining records of all notaries public; serving as the state's chief elections officer, keeping filed election results and candidate campaign reports; registering all trade marks, service marks, nonprofit and for-profit corporations, and limited partnerships; serving as the state's resource for the Uniform Commercial Code. The secretary also serves on the following boards and commissions: State Board of Elections (Chairman); State Board of Finance (Secretary); State Board of Canvassers (Member); Recorded of Permits for Concealed Weapons. The salary for this position is $83,135/year.

If you plan to run as a partisan candidate please contact your local party office for further instructions. 3) Submit the nominating petitions with the stipulated amount of signatures to the South Dakota Secretary of State Election Services Division by the filing deadline. The amount of required nominating petition signatures varies by office. The filing window for independents runs from the 1st of January until the last Tuesday of April at 5pm.
