Description

The Secretary of State for Mississippi is one of the constitutional officers of the U.S. state of Mississippi. The secretary of state is popularly elected every four years, and re-election is not restricted by term limits. The officeholder serves as Chief Elections officer for Mississippi, and is the official "keeper of the Capitol." Duties of the secretary of state also include keeping a correct register of all the governor's proceedings, acting as State Land Commissioner, and a point of contact between businesses. The salary for this position is $90,000/year.

Application Guidelines

To file for this position follow these three steps: 1) Contact the Mississippi Secretary of State Elections Division to confirm that your registered address qualifies you for the position you intend to run for, and that you meet other office specific qualifications. Obtain the correct candidacy filing paperwork. 2) Complete the required candidacy paperwork including the appropriate campaign finance forms, and if you plan to run as an independent a nominating petition form. If you plan to run as a partisan candidate please contact your local party office for further instructions as the filing window will differ from the independent candidate filing window. 3) If you plan to run as an independent candidate, submit the nominating certificate with the stipulated amount of verified signatures to the Mississippi Secretary of State Elections Division by the filing deadline. The amount of required nominating petition signatures varies by office. The filing deadline for independents is 60 days before the general election and signatures may not be collected before January 1st the year of the election.
