Mississippi Lieutenant Governor

Description

The Lieutenant Governor of the State of Mississippi is an elected constitutional officer, the second ranking officer of the executive branch and the first officer in line to succeed the Governor of Mississippi. The lieutenant governor is popularly elected every four years by a plurality and is limited to two terms. The lieutenant governor is president of the state senate and presides over that body, only voting to break a tie. Compared to the lieutenant governors in other states, Mississippi's has a great deal of power concerning the state senate. The lieutenant governor has the sole ability to appoint members, vice chairmen and chairmen to the various senate committees, regardless of each party's strength in the chamber. In the event of the death, resignation or removal of the governor, the lieutenant governor assumes the higher office. Also, if the governor is out of state, then the lieutenant governor can act in the governor's place. They have such other responsibilities and duties as the governor shall assign. The salary for this position is $60,000/year.

To file for this position follow these three steps: 1) Contact the Mississippi Secretary of State Elections Division to confirm that your registered address qualifies you for the position you intend to run for, and that you meet other office specific qualifications. Obtain the correct candidacy filing paperwork. 2) Complete the required candidacy paperwork including the appropriate campaign finance forms, and if you plan to run as an independent a nominating petition form. If you plan to run as a partisan candidate please contact your local party office for further instructions as the filing window will differ from the independent candidate filing window. 3) If you plan to run as an independent candidate, submit the nominating certificate with the stipulated amount of verified signatures to the Mississippi Secretary of State Elections Division by the filing deadline. The amount of required nominating petition signatures varies by office. The filing deadline for independents is 60 days before the general election and signatures may not be collected before January 1st the year of the election.
