Oregon Governor
Description
The Governor of the State of Oregon is an elected constitutional officer, the head of the executive branch, and the highest state office in Oregon. The governor is popularly elected every four years by a plurality and is limited to two four-year terms out of a 12-year span. The governor is the commander-in-chief of state military. The governor also has the power to grant pardons and reprieves and to commute sentences. The governor may convene a special session of the state legislature. Additionally, the governor serves on the State Land Board which is tasked with managing state-owned lands to "obtain the greatest benefit for the people of Oregon, consistent with resource conservation and sound land management." Other duties and privileges of the office include: Making periodic addresses to the General Assembly concerning and the state of the state and making recommendations on legislation; Upholding and ensuring the faithful execution of all state laws; Requiring written information from the head of any Administrative or Military Department on their duties and offices; Vetoing bills, including enjoying a line-item veto and an emergency clause veto. The gubernatorial veto is subject to a two-third majority override of the legislature; Making vacancies, including recess vacancies, for all offices not otherwise provided for; Issuing writs of special election for all vacancies that occur in the legislature; Signing all commissions issues in the name of the state of Oregon. The salary for this position is $98,600/year.
Application Guidelines
To file for this position follow these three steps: 1) Contact the Oregon Secretary of State Elections Division to confirm that your registered address qualifies you for the position you intend to run for, and that you meet other office specific qualifications. If you plan to run as a nonaffiliated “independent” candidate request approval to circulate petitions. 2) Upon receiving approval to circulate petitions, the Oregon Secretary of State Elections Division will inform you of the required number of signatures and the filing deadline. Gather signatures and complete candidacy filing and campaign finance forms. If you plan to run as a partisan candidate, the filing details are different, please contact your local party office for further instructions. 3) Submit the filing paperwork with the stipulated amount of signatures to the Oregon Secretary of State Elections Division. Before submission to the Oregon Secretary of State Elections Division, the signatures must first be authenticated by the county election office from the county in which the signatures were gathered. The filing period runs from the 15th day after the primary election until the 70th day before the general election (OR 249.722). The primary election is held on the 3rd Tuesday in May.
