Description

The Attorney General of Georgia is a state executive office established in 1797. The attorney general is a constitutional officer, and the legal adviser to the Governor of Georgia and the other departments of state government. The attorney general is elected to four-year terms during federal midterm election years and does not face term limits. The department of law's mission statement is "to serve the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers and employees of state government and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General." Duties include Serving as the attorney and legal advisor for all state agencies, departments, authorities and the governor, Providing opinions on legal questions concerning the state or its agencies, which are binding on all state agencies and departments, Representing the state in all capital felony appeals before the Georgia Supreme Court, Representing the state in all civil cases before any court, Representing the state in all cases appearing before the United States Supreme Court, Prosecuting public corruption cases where criminal charges are filed against any person or business for illegal activity when dealing with the state, Conducting special investigations into questionable activity concerning any state agency or department or a person or business that has done business with the state, Initiating civil or criminal actions on behalf of the state when requested to do so by the governor, and Preparing all contracts and agreements regarding any matter in which the state is involved. The Attorney General of Georgia has sole authority over campaign finance prosecution. All complaints of campaign finance law are referred to the Attorney General from the Georgia Ethics Commission. The first step in filing a complaint is to file with the Ethics Commission. It is up to the commission to determine if a complaint is valid upon review. The salary for this position is $137,791/year.

Application Guidelines
1) Contact the Georgia Secretary of State Office in order to confirm that your registered address qualifies you for the position you intend to run for, and to make sure there are no other qualifications which might make you ineligible. 2) Complete the Notice of Candidacy forms including a nominating petition if you plan to run as an independent. The amount of signatures required varies by office. Submit these Notice of Candidacy forms, petitions and a qualifying fee to the Georgia Secretary of State. Note* You can submit petition signatures in lieu of the filing fee. If you plan to run as an independent or for a nonpartisan office, submit these forms to the Georgia Secretary of State, however, if you are planning to run as a party candidate, submit these forms to your declared party. 3) Submit these forms during the week of the first Monday in March if you are running for a position that will appear on the May General Partisan Primary/Nonpartisan Ballot. If you plan to run as an independent or as a minor political body candidate in the November General Election, the filing window is during the week of the fourth Monday in June.
