Description

The Lieutenant Governor of the State of Georgia is an elected constitutional officer, the second ranking officer of the executive branch and the first officer in line to succeed the Governor of Georgia. The lieutenant governor is popularly elected every four years by a plurality and, unlike the governor, is not subject to term limits. The lieutenant governor's primary job is to serve as President of the Georgia State Senate. If the governor is temporarily unable to exercise his office, the lieutenant governor assumes the powers (but not the title) of the governor. Should the governor die or otherwise permanently leave office, the lieutenant governor becomes governor for the remainder of the term. As President of the Senate the lieutenant governor presides over debate in the Senate and casts a tie-breaking vote in that body if necessary. However, the lieutenant governor is barred from sponsoring legislation. He or she also maintains the power to make committee assignments and chooses the chairman of each committee. The salary for this position is $91,609/year.
